Verizon Picks Actiontec Wireless Router to Power FiOS Deployment

Actiontec Electronics today announced that its next generation wireless broadband router has been selected to power Verizon's FiOS (News - Alert) Internet Service. Already a key vendor in the FiOS architecture, Actiontec has been providing Verizon with customer premise equipment for more than five years. This latest product selection further strengthens the relationship between the two companies.

Actiontec's latest wireless broadband router sets a new industry benchmark for performance. As a result, Verizon (News - Alert) and other service providers can increase service speeds beyond 100 Mbps and better meet the needs of an increasingly sophisticated consumer base by rolling out multiple value-added, bandwidth-intensive applications, such as parental controls, online gaming, music, live sports, children's entertainment, movies and television programming.

"Our goal is to stay on the leading edge of the broadband home gateway market and keep developing new technologies that help our customers lower their operating and capital costs, as well as roll out a new generation of enhanced, differentiated applications," said Dean Chang, CEO of Actiontec. "We're proud that Verizon has again selected our equipment for their FiOS service and we look forward to continuing our partnership to give consumers faster speeds, greater entertainment and communication choices, and a consistently positive end user experience."

To achieve this latest performance level, Actiontec's router features an advanced hardware design including an industry-first 64-bit, dual-core processor. The router's 64-bit architecture provides a 10-15 percent performance improvement over the 32-bit standard deployed today. The router's latest MIPS core offers further performance improvement and additional instructions for networking applications reducing the number of cycles needed for even greater CPU efficiency.

Additionally, the router features innovative design features like hardware-level Quality of Service that free the CPU for other bandwidth needs, thereby ensuring that providers can deliver multiple high quality video streams without any dropped frames, frozen frames, or other performance issues that can degrade video and television service and impede IPTV (News - Alert) adoption.

"The residential gateway serves as a lynchpin in not only providing consumers with seamless access to multiple services, but also as the foundation for emerging broadband value-added services, which are projected to add $1.3 billion in additional broadband service revenues by 2012," said Kurt Scherf, vice president and principal analyst with Parks Associates. "Actiontec's wireless broadband router -- with its increased performance -- characterizes the importance of advanced broadband customer premise equipment that will support future service provider initiatives."

The latest offering from Actiontec with increased broadband speeds helps accelerate the adoption of convergence solutions.
